SURF LESSONS
“A former World Champion surfer, who kills his brother in a jealous rage, gets freed from prison and can redeem himself by helping his nephew to become a man and champion of the surfing world.”

Poverty in Paradise
We meet 8-year-old Kekoa as he rides to victory over his best friend Nick in the final heat of their first surf contest. Kekoa’s other good friend is Lily, an aspiring photographer who shoots photos of the boys. Kekoa is a very sweet, fatherless Hawaiian boy from the Westside of Oahu. After the contest, Kekoa comes home to discover that he and his mom, Leilani have been evicted due to her not paying the rent. Leilani asks Nick’s dad, Desmond to take care of Kekoa while she tries to get her life together. Leilani leaves, both mother and son in tears.

Later, as a teenager, Kekoa is still surfing competitively — a rising star destined for fame and fortune — but he has become cocky and hangs out with the wrong dudes. He continually butts heads with the surf contest director Dick, who in turn makes it hard for the boy. Though Kekoa lives at home, it’s not a pretty place, as both he and his mother get beat up by her boyfriend. While partying with his girlfriend Lily at a local dance one night, Kekoa sees a girl get slapped around by another boy and he intervenes to protect her. Kekoa loses control and nearly kills the boy in a fit of rage. He ends up in juvenile jail and is kicked out of the surf association, smashing his dream of surf stardom.

A Slap Upside The Head.
In jail, Kekoa gets beat up by the other guys, develops a bad attitude and tattoos himself “Champ”. He reads how his friend Nick makes the pro tour and that Lily has been hired as a photographer. When Lily comes to visit Kekoa in Jail, she ends their relationship. His life sucks. At an assembly in jail one day, a group of older ex-cons come to talk to the young men about avoiding the life of crime. The final speaker Bully Kealoha, had been surfing’s world champ and lost it all to violence. Kekoa listens up. Kekoa and Bully meet at lunch and discover they are both from the Westside. Bully offers to help the kid when he gets out. Kekoa is arrogant but knows the old guy has been to the top, and he desperately wants to get there himself. They meet up a year later and a humbled, desperate Kekoa, asks for his help. Bully slaps the kids ego, but agrees to help.

World Tour. Back In The Family.
Bully is very funny, but doesn’t take any shit from the kid. He helps Kekoa physically, spiritually and emotionally. Bully is not perfect, and is on his own path of redemption. Kekoa’s mom, Leilani comes to Bully to talk. It’s obvious that she and Bully have a shared connection to the past and that Bully had something to do with the death of Kekoa’s father. Bully asks her forgiveness but she will not give it. She tells him to leave her son alone, but Bully continues to help the boy.

Dick, the pro surf contest director is an old friend and competitor of Bully’s and does not like Kekoa or want him back on the tour. Bully tests the limits of his strained friendship with Dick, his former competitor. After much lobbying, Bully gets the kid accepted back in, on one condition — no more violence or arrests, or he’ll be banned for good.

Another source of trouble for Kekoa is Mackey, an Australian surfer who will cheat to win. When the tour resumes, Kekoa Mackey and Nick — the current world champ — are competing fiercely. Kekoa wins a big contest in France and is at the top of the tour. He celebrates with Lily, who he’s been rekindling his relationship with, but Nick and the guys crash the dinner and make it a party. As they are leaving the restaurant, the hotel across the street explodes due to a terrorist act. The surfers react and save many people due to their quick response and bravery. Though severely injured in the explosion, Lily is able to shoot and narrate a video that is shown around the world, making her a media star.

They return to Hawaii to a hero’s welcome. While out to dinner with Lily, a drunk attacks Kekoa and he shoves the guy into the street. A car hits the guy and Kekoa is arrested again and kicked off the tour. The troublemaker Mackey had set this up. Bully doesn’t believe Kekoa’s story of innocence and they argue and end their relationship. Amateur video proves Kekoa’s innocence. Kekoa goes to Dick to plead his case. Dick refuses to listen. Kekoa invokes his connection to Bully. Dick then tells Kekoa that Bully was only helping him because he had killed his father.

Kekoa flips out, goes to his mom and she tearfully tells him the whole story. She and Bully were sweethearts and she got pregnant. She was afraid and confided in Bully’s brother. Bully thought that they were having an affair. In a fit of rage he killed his brother. Bully refused to believe Leilani when she told him that he was Kekoa’s father, so she quit trying to convince him. Now, the time for healing has come. Leilani, Kekoa and Bully have an emotional meeting and reunite as a family — father, mother and son. Tears flow and years of pain are washed away in the surf.

You Are A Champion.
The pro surf committee allows Kekoa back in competition to compete with Nick and Mackey for the world title. Dick runs the show. Lily is a network TV reporter, Bully is on water patrol and Leilani is in the stands. During the final event, Mackey tries cheating against Kekoa but the trick backfires and Mackey gets pounded into the reef and is drowning. Bully goes to save Mackey and also gets pounded into the reef. Putting his life on the line, Kekoa pulls Mackey and then Bully to safety. Kekoa hops in the ambulance to be with Bully, but Leilani takes his place and tells Kekoa to go finish the contest. The injured men are taken to the hospital in critical condition. Kekoa and Nick have made the finals. Dick, who had always been hard on Kekoa, finally sees the young man for the hero he is. Dick apologizes and offers to postpone the contest due to the tragedy but the young men agree to continue. After a prayer and moment of silence for Bully and Mackey, with the entire crowd linking hands, Kekoa and Nick take to the waves. Kekoa wins in a thriller and becomes World Champ.

The final scene has Kekoa, Lily, Bully, Leilani, Nick and his family watching the sunset on the beach, one big ohana (family.)
